Coronavirus: Clark County health district dispels myths about virus

The Clark County Combined Health District took to social media to dispel myths about the coronavirus pandemic.

In a post on the district's Facebook page, the district said myths around COVID-19 are constantly popping up in conversations and on social media as the pandemic stretches on.

"Since COVID-19 is a novel virus, the information surrounding it is constantly changing as we discover more," a post on the district's Facebook page said.

Here are the five "myths" around the coronavirus pandemic and there corrected facts, according to the CCCHD.

Myth: If I am outdoors, I do not need to practice social distancing

Fact: It is still important to stay six feet away from others. Some people can spread the virus without showing symptoms.

Myth: It's okay if I go over to my friend's house and hang out, just this once.

Fact: Social distancing only works if everyone stays within their immediate household circles.

Myth: Young people do not get COVID-19.

Fact: Older individuals and people with chronic medical conditionals are at a higher risk of serious illness but anyone can become sick.

Myth: I have to be exposed to someone for several minutes to catch the virus that causes COVID-19.

Fact: You can catch the virus from the respiratory droplets of someone who has it regardless of how long you are near them.

Myth: Surgical masks cause oxygen deficiency and CO2 intoxication.

Fact: Face masks will not cause serious health effects and they prevent the wearer from spreading the virus to others.

Clark County had 1,092 cases, 12 deaths and two probable deaths, of the coronavirus as of Tuesday afternoon, according to the Ohio Department of Health's website. Champaign County had 150 cases and one death.
